I'm just starting to experiment with tribal art and tattoo designs.

As a graphic design the tattoo is lopsided and lacking symmetry. What would work is to do half of it in an editer program and then mirror image it. Once that's done, you can edit some more and add the frills to the sections as needed. The banner at the top is not done very well and looks awfully crude, and the lettering needs a lot of work to look decent.

What passes for "tribal" depends on who you talk to, I guess. The "tribal" label is reconized to be aboriginal or ethnic, but it looks like the buzz word is getting picked up by some subcultures and claimed as their own. Regardless, a quick Google search yields some truly appalling work that some folks are going to regret later in life. One article called "Inks That Stink" shows what happens when ill-considered designs and inept tattoo artists converge.

You might try doing design layout on grid paper to keep proportions in scale, and the other issue is to consider where the design would go and tailor it to the body contours keeping in mind how it will look in 3D.

Good critique Robert. And Dallas, don't be discouraged by a neg rating on your first work, there's potential in this small sample and I'd like to see more. Just clean it up, like Robert said.

Thank you :-) This one has sat for a while with no comments and I felt like something needed to be said about it that could steer it in the right direction.

Welcome to Artsig! Check out the FAQs on how to get the best use out of the site and the way the site operates. One of the key things is that everyone is expected to write critiques to other members, and the expectation is that each member will write three crits to match each work that they post. When other members see that someone is contributing critiques, they are more likely to critique that person's work. Again, welcome to Artsig :-)
