Hello Ross,

I've come back to this work a couple of times now and I still don't feel quite ready to critique it - I will give it a try though.

You've used a bold combination of colours and shapes here. The main shape in orange and blue vaguely reminds me of some of Keith Haring's works. It does not have a painted feel to it, it could've been drawn with felt-tipped pens as well. The red circular shapes show visual brush strokes. These strokes, together with the shadow like blacks and the white edges, provide for depth and liveliness, for a sense of life.
The one thing I don't like too much, are the rather sharp edges around the shapes, especially around that main shape.

At first I found it difficult to relate the orange-blue shapes to the red shapes and the black background. But after looking at it a few times, I don't see them as different things anymore. I now feel that they belong together and form a unity.

This painting arouses my imagination - I think I could have it hanging on my wall for quite some time without getting bored by it - but I would like to have it on a very large size then!

Kind regards,
Anneke.

It's a doodle, a nice doodle but a doodle. The most interesting thing about it is the texture of the ground (canvas or hardboard?). Maybe you should try building up the paint to give some impasto or something to lift it, in more than one sense of the word.

I don't agree that this painting would not be more than just a doodle, but everybody is entitled to have his own opinion. But there are other -more friendly- ways to express your opinion...

It's okay Anneke, I distinctly remember once being told that if I'm doing abstracts, I can easily expect to hear someone say "My kid could do that!" or words to that effect. :)

Ali, how can you come to the conclusion that this is part of Ross's work?

This is the full canvas, I was very careful to make the composition wide open, so that there was that feeling of looking at a part of a whole. Thank you for the critique!

Ross, abstracts fall into the like or indifference category.
I do like this work for the forms and colour.
I have no rational to support my argument here (nor is it required, I guess)...
You seem to have mastered the digital transfer.
I look forward to more!
