Hi Richard, cannot say that I do not like your painting but I hate those two dark pictures on the wall at the same level and taking away the attention from the lady, I prefer both being lighter and and colored the same way, maybe, as the naked lady, otherwise the lady is perfect and the composition is not bad at all to my taste. Regards. Talal

We had an argument about it in the sitting - there were four of us drawing and painting and a "tutor" who set up the pose and stuck the brown paper on the wall almost as a dare to us all. The other three ignored the paper, but I drew it anyway - it's very much my style to include these background details, and I wouldn't change this. As I said elsewhere the excitement with these figure studies is putting the figure in space, so background and foreground details are very much part of it. But I remember complaining bitterly as I struggled with this one (and it was a bit of a struggle) that the paper was in the wrong place - it should have been a bit lower behind her rather than floating above. My solution to make the paper seem above and behind was to paint it in a different way. Well, others may see it differently, but that was my response at the time after 2 hours plus of working on what I saw.
So what I think is that some days we must (have a duty to) paint or draw what is in front of us irrespective of whether we'd have set up the pose that way. By all means set up the pose the next time - but setting things up all the time is a form of control (and therefore escapism) that is a kind of self-delusion and will at some times make us miss the new textures or compositions or styles that we'd never have carried in our minds to the studio. I'm not saying this one works, just that I had to do it as I saw it, though I'd never have chosen it quite like this had I been in control.
Wow this is a big reply, but I mean it :) Take care and thanks for your crit!

I think this is very nicely done. Maybe just the model and the bed....nothing above...to cause distraction....nice coloring....and her expression is a serious undertone....has a lazy feel to it......nice...

Very nice Expressionistic work. Really nicely communicated sense of place.
The languid, luxurious figure is wonderfully painted. This is a really fine painting with a real sense of Art tradition behind it.

I really like your choice of model, you've portrayed her curves well I think. My nit is with the room corner above her. I think that having her in a corner pulls my eye up and away from her! It competes as a subject. Carole

Thanks for your comment Carole. I'm interested you think this and find it helpful to know. I always try to place the figure in the space around it. Possibly this one is too busy, or I haven't got the depth right. I'm not sure.

Well I am a photographer not a painter so I may come at it with a different outlook! It's terrific anyway. Carole
